After completing secondary school, she first attended an agricultural school for women before later obtaining her high school diploma. A year later, she and Helmuth married in Cologne. After the death of her mother-in-law, Dorothy von Moltke, in 1935, Freya accepted responsibility for managing the large Kreisau estate. During the Nazi regime, the estate became a <strong>refuge <\/strong>for friends who had been bombed out of their homes or persecuted. Under Freya\u2019s supervision and care, Kreisau became a <strong>central meeting point for resistance activities against the Nazis<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"freyas-resistance-against-national-socialism\">Freya&#8217;s Resistance against National Socialism<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Helmuth James von Moltke and Peter Graf Yorck von Wartenburg established a resistance group early on, uniting people from diverse social, political, and religious backgrounds in opposition to the Nazi dictatorship. Later known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fvms.de\/en\/kreisau-krzyzowa-2\/history\/the-members-of-the-kreisau-circle\/\">Kreisauer Kreis<\/a> (Kreisau Circle), this group developed plans during three meetings held in Kreisau in 1942 and 1943 for <strong>rebuilding a democratic Germany deeply rooted within Europe after the end of National Socialism<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freya\u2019s husband, Helmuth James von Moltke, along with seven other members of the Kreisauer Kreis, was sentenced to death by the Nazi judiciary for his role in the resistance and was executed in Berlin-Pl\u00f6tzensee. Freya von Moltke, herself a member of the Kreisauer Kreis, supported her husband during their resistance activities and his imprisonment. Their correspondence is an invaluable <strong>testament to their resistance <\/strong>against the Nazi regime.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-fvms-blocks-testimonial-container testimonial-container full-width testimonial-container--bg\" style=\"background-color:#fcebd2;color:black\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-group testimonial-container__list is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<li class=\"wp-block-fvms-blocks-testimonial testimonial slider-container\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns testimonial__cols is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column testimonial__content-wrapper is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"testimonial__content\">&#8220;Every form and every act of resistance against National Socialism was worthwhile. None of it was in vain. Every act against the blatant injustice of the Nazi dictatorship mattered. It was worth it because the German resistance kept European humanity alive within Germany<strong>.&#8221;<\/strong>   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"testimonial__author\">Freya von Moltke<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-fvms-blocks-testimonial testimonial slider-container\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns testimonial__cols is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column testimonial__content-wrapper is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"testimonial__content\">\u201eAnd then what? Dealing with this question, and the belief that there would indeed be a \u2018later,\u2019 regardless of how it might unfold, gave many people at the time the courage to go on living. [&#8230;] Back then, it was a true act of faith to contemplate the future, an act of self-preservation and the preservation of one\u2019s own integrity.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"testimonial__author\">Freya von Moltke<\/p>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-fvms-blocks-testimonial testimonial\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns testimonial__cols is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column testimonial__content-wrapper is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"testimonial__content\">\u201eWhen everyone thinks alike, they gather around a table and write it down; that isn\u2019t much. Today, what matters is that people who think differently engage in dialogue\u2014this was something the Kreisauer Kreis excelled in.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"testimonial__author\">Freya von Moltke<\/p>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wp-block-fvms-blocks-testimonial testimonial\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns testimonial__cols is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column testimonial__content-wrapper is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"testimonial__content\">&#8220;Every day, Kreisau fulfils the mission it was destined for: bringing youth together on European soil. Kreisau lives!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"testimonial__author\">Freya von Moltke<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-fvms-blocks-cw-container cw-container full-width cw-container__padding-top cw-container__padding-bottom\" style=\"background-color:white;color:black\"><div class=\"max-width-content \"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"after-the-war\">After the War<br><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>After the end of World War II, the loss of her husband, and the loss of her home in Kreisau, Freya von Moltke left Germany and moved to South Africa with her children, where she worked as a social worker. In 1956, she decided to return to Germany and, four years later, relocated to the United States. She dedicated her <strong>life\u2019s work to keeping the memory of the German resistance alive<\/strong> and repeatedly emphasized the significance of the resistance for post-war Germany.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By supporting and advising numerous publications about the Kreisauer Kreis, publishing her husband\u2019s letters, and writing her book &#8216;Memories of Kreisau&#8217;, Freya von Moltke kept the legacy of the Kreisau resistance alive. She passed away in Vermont on January 1, 2010. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-fvms-blocks-mw-container mw-container full-width section-bottom-padding section-top-padding\" id=\"a-strong-advocate-of-the-kreisau-project\">A strong advocate of the Kreisau Project<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Freya von Moltke was a determined advocate of the New Kreisau. The vision of an <strong>International Youth Meeting Centre<\/strong> in Kreisau\/Krzy\u017cowa began to take shape in the summer of 1989, against the backdrop of political changes in Poland and the GDR and the end of the Cold War. Thanks to the commitment of many people from different countries, the idea of Kreisau as a place for European encounters could be realized, and in 1990 the Polish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.krzyzowa.pl\/de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kreisau Foundation for European Understanding<\/a> was established.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"namesake-of-our-foundation\">Namesake of Our Foundation<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>When our foundation was set up in Germany in 2004 to secure the existence of the meeting place in Kreisau\/Krzy\u017cowa, Poland, Freya von Moltke supported the project and agreed to name it the Freya von Moltke Foundation.
